DOT Administrative Suspension Guidelines
First Offesne at a BrAC Level of .08 Carries a 180 day suspension
Eligible for a restricted license (with a Smart Start Ignition Interlock Device installed) immediately unless:
- You are under the age of 21, then must wait until a 60 day suspension period is served.
- You have a prior OWI/DUI in the previous 12 years
- You had an accident occur with your OWI/DUI
- You registered a .15 BrAC level or higher, the not available until 30 day suspension period served.
If you had a reading that was .10 or higher:
- You must have an Ignition Interlock device installed.
To obtain your Temporary Restricted License you will want to:
- Contact Iowa DOT to ensure eligibility first. You can reach them at (800) 532-1121
- Complete the application listed in our Iowa Forms page and submit it.
- Obtain SR-22 insurance and ensure your insurance company files it with the Iowa DOT
- .
- Have an Ignition Interlock device installed at an Authorized Smart Start service Center.
Next Step is to go to your closet Iowa Driver's License Issuing Site http://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/ods/dlsites.htm:
- Take your Ignition Interlock Proof of Installation Form provided by authorized Smart Start service center
- $243 to pay for your permit ($43) and your civil fine ($200) (Some fines vary, check locally to make sure)
- Copy of your TRLP application
- Copy of your SR-22 Insurance Proof
Second Offense and above Carries a 365 day suspension.
- Must wait 45 of the Suspension Period to be eligible
